New stadium construction begins

Preparatory works have started at the Plough Lane stadium site that will become football club AFC Wimbledonís new home.

Demolition work has already been completed at the site, which used to be Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, and last month contractors Buckingham Group started on ground stabilisation work in preparation for building.

When the initial preparatory works are completed, there will be a ceremony to mark breaking the ground before the main construction phase starts.

AFC Wimbledon has played at Kingsmeadow in Kingston-upon-Thames since 2002, and will create an initial capacity of 10,000 at the new site that will increase to a 20,000-seater stadium.

Plans also include 602 residential units, retail space and a squash and fitness club, with the stadium scheduled to finish next year in time for the 2020-21 season.
